Chapter One
The bear was missing an eye again. It was the third time that month the thing had somehow managed to lose it. With a weary sigh, Freya plucked a wooden button from the clutter of the workbench. She threaded her needle without looking, her hands as steady as they had always been, and began stitching it back into place.
A curtain of pale blonde hair slipped free from the hood she spent most of her life hiding behind. Brushing the stray lock away with the back of her wrist, she nudged the lamp closer to her patient and focused on the final knot.
"There," Freya murmured, snipping the thread. "Good as new."
The plush bear lifted a paw to inspect its repaired eye. Seemingly content with the fix, it touched the fresh stitches along its face before dipping its head in a tiny bow.
Freya huffed and gave its ear a playful, cautionary flick. "You're welcome. Just try not to lose this one, okay?"
